Is it Possible to Have a Period While Pregnant?

There are many women who say that they are having their period while pregnant. But this could not happen because menstruation and pregnancy cannot occur at the same time. If you are pregnant and you are having your menstruation at some point; it only means that you are losing your pregnancy, usually called miscarriage.  Can you have a period while pregnant? The answer will surely be no. However, there are situations in which you will experience some amount of vaginal bleeding without any threat to the fetus that is growing inside you. Known as implantation bleeding, this slight vaginal bleeding might be what women see as their menstrual period, when it actually is not.

Period While Pregnant: Early Pregnancy Bleeding

Early pregnancy bleeding is not an uncommon case among pregnant women and there are many reports of them experiencing bleeding during the early stage of their pregnancy.  This should not be confused as a woman’s menstruation period. Bleeding may also be due to hormonal changes. Such cases do not equal the quantity of blood that women have during her menstrual period. The bleeding usually varies from just a mere spot to heavy bleeding.

There is another kind of bleeding that women experience. Known as implantation bleeding, this happens when the embryo is attaching itself on the walls of the uterus. The bleeding usually occurs five days after conception and is one thing that many women confuse as period while pregnant. Women can easily confuse this bleeding to their menstrual cycle which results in a difficult determination of when their last menstruation period is. The implantation bleeding is not common at all but there are reports associated with it that ranges from a slight spot of pink or red to heavy bleeding.

Other Causes of Period While Pregnant

You may also want to know that getting pregnant while on the pill can also be associated with bleeding during pregnancy. This can also result in the confusion of having menstruation while pregnant. Many women who take pills have reported several bleeding occurrences.  When this happens, many women fail to tell their doctors their last menstrual period which is vital in determining the due date. In such cases, an ultrasound will be the tool used to determine when the baby will come out.

There are many reasons why women experience bleeding as mentioned above. But they are not to be confused as period while pregnant. Having a period while pregnant is very impossible, because menstruation and pregnancy are different two things and only one can happen at a time. If you are pregnant, you cannot have your period. If you are having your period, you are not pregnant and cannot conceive as well. When you are experiencing any sort of bleeding while pregnant; it is much better to consult your doctors. It is very rare that women will experience such problems but, if they do, it could potentially be very dangerous for them and the baby that they are carrying.
